Our story
Three generations of Fayetteville families
Fayetteville Children’s Clinic was established in 1953 by Dr. J. A. Shaw, Dr. Richard Kelly and Dr. William Breeden. Seventy years and three generations later, we are the city’s oldest pediatric practice, caring for the children of the children we once cared for.
Our clinic is in the Historic Haymount district. Inside, the same warmth carries through: exposed brick, sunny windows, and staff members who have been part of this practice for more than twenty years.

A sick child is stressful. Here is exactly what to do, whatever the hour. When you are not sure, call us first: a nurse can help you decide.

Call 911 or go to the Pediatric Emergency Department at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Trouble breathing, a seizure, or a child you cannot wake are emergencies.

The care journey
Growing up well, every step of the way
From the very first newborn visit through the college physical, the same doctors follow your child year after year, catching small things before they grow and cheering every milestone along the way.
The first year
We see your baby 2 to 4 days after you come home, then at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months. Every visit checks growth and feeding, supports new parents, and keeps immunizations on the AAP schedule.
The toddler years
Well visits at 15, 18, 24, and 30 months, then once a year. We track milestones, speech and behavior, and keep vaccines on schedule, with plenty of time for your questions.
The school years
A yearly check-up with growth, vision and hearing screening, plus the school, camp, and sports physicals you need, and guidance on healthy habits.
The teen years
A yearly visit with confidential time, screening for mood, nutrition and well-being, and the vaccines recommended for adolescents.
Off to college
Pre-college physicals and the forms and immunization records your child's school requires, ready before they head off.
About well-child care
Well-visit times fill 1 to 2 months ahead, so call early for camp, sports, kindergarten and college deadlines.

The next generation of doctors learns here
Fayetteville Children’s Clinic is a teaching practice. Our physicians serve as preceptors for the Duke SR-AHEC Family Medicine Residency, helping train the resident physicians who will care for our community.
Teaching keeps our clinical knowledge current and adds time for explaining things well. As we like to say: teaching facilitates understanding like no other endeavor in a day’s work.

We have 24-hour phone coverage. A free Call4Health answering service is available, and if your question is urgent it can transfer you to a registered nurse. A doctor is always on call.
From newborn through 30 months, visits follow the recommended schedule: 2 to 4 days after hospital discharge, then 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24 and 30 months. Starting at age 3, a yearly wellness visit is recommended.

Absolutely! We offer prenatal appointments so you can learn about the practice and meet the doctor you pick.
Notify admissions at labor and delivery that you have chosen Fayetteville Children’s Clinic to care for your newborn.
Same-day sick appointments are almost always available. Call our front office and we will get your child in. If you are not sure, a nurse can offer phone advice as time allows.

Saturday clinics are temporarily closed from May 23 through September 5, 2026. Saturday walk-in urgent care is for established patients and carries a $35 fee.
